Changes to NZ Law concerning Teeth Whitening

The law concerning teeth whitening products and practitioners will soon change.
In short, no product will be able to be sold to members of the public containing more than 6% Hydrogen Peroxide (or equivalent), and the new regulations stipulate the labelling and warnings that must be included. Dentists may supply product with higher concentrations of Hydrogen Peroxide.

Teeth Whitening products containing greater than 12% Hydrogen Peroxide (or equivalent) will only be able to be applied by a Dentist.

Non-Registered Teeth Whitening Practitioners will be able to apply Teeth Whitening products containing from 7 – 12 % Hydrogen Peroxide (or equivalent) without supervision by a Dentist.

Q. What does this mean for the Cosmetic Teeth Whitening Industry?

A. Not a whole lot really. Most Teeth Whitening Practitioners are already using products within the specified range of Hydrogen Peroxide content (although some are STILL using products containing 16% Hydrogen Peroxide content). The reason is that client comfort is a priority, and using high concentrations of Hydrogen Peroxide can cause increased tooth sensitivity – both during and after the procedure – and can cause burning and swelling to lips and gums. For some people, using whitening gels with a high strength of Hydrogen Peroxide can lead to excruciating pain during the procedure, since the Hydrogen Peroxide penetrates deep into the tooth (this is necessary in order for the bleaching process to work), and can affect the nerve causing pain.

One Mobile Teeth Whitening Practice which adopted these new safety standards even before they became law, and can be trusted, is Celebrity Smile, currently operating throughout the greater Auckland region.
